Ishasha Wilderness Camp
Ishasha Wilderness Camp is situated inside the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park on the Ntungwe river, and is an idyllic retreat for people who truly enjoy the wilderness. Being the only upmarket accommodation in the area, this exclusive tented camp offers quality accommodation and services in this unspoilt remote southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park famous for its tree climbing lions that can sometimes be spotted resting in the branches of the large fig trees in the area.
Combined with excellent game viewing opportunities for buffalo, elephants, kob, topi and other species of antelope, the camp provides the ideal location, for a midway break, between gorilla viewing in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the other areas of QENP or Kibale Forest. Excursions to the Lake Edward Flats area are possible where large herds of game can be seen as well as birdlife, including the elusive shoebill stork at various times of the year.
Each of the ten spacious East African style Meru tents, situated in the wooded area besides the river, is comfortably furnished and with its own private en suite bathroom and dressing area providing hot water “bush” showers and an eco friendly toilet.
A central lounge / dining area, also under canvas, provides a comfortable environment for meals and relaxing during the day. The outdoor shaded area besides the river offers el fresco dining and an evening “fireplace” venue for guests who come to enjoy this unique bush experience offered at this wilderness camp.
As the camp is within the National Park, we have designed it to be as low impact as possible with low usage of water, power and other resources. Solar power is used for lighting with power points limited to a central area allocated for recharging cameras and videos.
Meals are freshly prepared with many local ingredients, offering a balance of international and locally flavoured cuisine with most meals being of several courses. Our bar has a selection of local and imported beverages and our friendly local staff will attend to your needs.
Hot beverages are available throughout the day on a self service basis, but, are delivered to your tent with early morning wake up calls as required, allowing you to savour the early morning sounds of the “bush” awakening.
Activities
The Queen Elizabeth national Park spreads over an area of 1978 square km in the western arm of the Great East African Rift Valley. The park is home to a variety of wildlife including elephant, lion, hippo, leopard, buffalo and Uganda kob. Birds present are all typical of riverine and savannah habitats.
The Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park is the place to search for the tree climbing lions often to be seen in the vicinity of the camp which is situated just off the Northern circuit
game viewing track. The lions also favour the large fig trees on the Southern circuit game viewing track and this offers alternative game viewing routes.
On early morning and late afternoon game drives, either in your safari vehicle, or for fly-in guests, in our open vehicle, you may explore the areas game routes in search of the different species. The area is still pristine and untouched with only a handful of game vehicles found around the area at any time.
You may also explore the camp area on foot and do some bird-watching with Nerina trojon and black bee eaters being two of the rarer bird species sighted at the camp. Guided walks with National
Park staff can be arranged along the Ishasha river area for close up viewing of hippos and offer a unique bush experience.
Community Projects can be visited nearby including a performance with a local dance and drama group, and walk through the nearby Kazinga village where schools, homes and farms can be visited with a guide or visits to the traditional medicinal herbalists.
