With just 11 tents, Mdonya Old River is a small camp offering a personal service tailor-made to clients' needs. And its in the best place to be - where the animals are! The tents are spread out over a large area with many shade trees.

For people wanting the true bush experience, this small camp with only tented structures fits naturally into the surroundings. The camp hosts comfortable sitting areas, and hides at both ends of the camp, where you can sit and watch the game pass by all day long. The dining and lounge tents are under Acacias and Sycamore Figs overlooking the dry river bed which is used by game as a corridor, so that guests can enjoy the game viewing even while having lunch or relaxing. The romance of dining by candlelight to the sound of crickets and the occasional hyena or lion, is unforgettable.

The tents are simply but comfortably furnished. There is no electricity (except in the office, where camera and other batteries can be charged up overnight). There are candles, a torch and oil lamps are left on the verandas and in the bathrooms, at night. Therei s a lockup chest and a simple rack for clothes.

The tents are scattered in a spacious area under the shade of large sycamore figs and Faidherbia albida, nestled in the curving banks of a sand-river. They are traditional safari tents, comfortably furnished with double or twin beds and with large verandahs where one can relax and observe the wildlife around.

All the tents have ensuite bathrooms with dressing room, open-roofed shower and separate flush toilet.

There are three family tents, with separate room zipped on in place of the veranda. the extra room contains twin beds and there is a partition with zip between the two chambers. The central main bedroom has a double bed. At the back is a dressing area with washstand. the bathroom is behind that, with a flush loo and shower open to the sky.

The camp is located in a beautiful isolated area and sitting in the camp with a book and a pair of binoculars may be quite rewarding. Of course we offer traditional game drive safaris too.

For those who seek adventure there are many options at Mdonya:

Game drives are flexible and not limited by any schedule! Guests get a chance to seethe breathtaking mosaic of ecosystems, from the river pools to the dry open savannah.

Monolithic granite boulders dating from the formation of the Great Rift Valley and exposed by erosion litter the area, especially by the Mdonya Falls. There are Baobab valleys and sand rivers fringed with Hyphaene petersiana palms.
