Rekero
Rekero Tented Camp lies in the heart of Kenya’s Maasi Mara, the world-famous nature reserve which plays hostnot only to an extraordinary concentration and diversity of wildlife but one ofmother nature’s greatest spectacles: the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra across the Serengeti eco system.
This dramatic location rich in flora and fauna is also home to the Looseyia and Beaton families whose association with the area stretches back generations. The Rekero story began some 125 years ago when the Beatons first arrived in Africa from the Isle of Skye. They went on to pioneer Kenya’s conservation movement in the mid 1900’s and today the youngest branch of the family tree, Gerard and his wife Rainee, continue that long and heartfelt tradition.
Rekero Accommodation
The camp sits on a shady bank of the Talek River looking downstream towards the confluence with the Mara River which flows in from the north of the game reserve. Each of the eight, large, walk-in tents share a private piece of the stunning riverside setting, looking across the water to a broad plain which sees much of the wildlife action for the duration of this adventure under canvas. Each tent has an ensuite bathroom with ‘safari’(bucket) shower, sink and flush toilet.
A team of safari chefs prepare tasty ‘farmhouse meals’ for guests during their stay. Lunches are enjoyed by the water’s edge under the shade of an African Pepper tree while dinners are served by candlelight in an open tent higher up the bank.
Rekero’s bush guides are widely recognised to be among the best in East Africa. They undergo a long period of professional training beyond the learning of guiding skills to fully understand the complexity and demands of delivering quality service at the very highest level. Much of the team is either second generation Rekero or been with the team for over 20 years, making this operation a true local partnership.
Rekero Wildlife
The Masai Mara Game Reserve and adjacent Conservation area totals 750 square miles and forms the northern tip of the Serengeti / Mara ecosystem. The Masai Mara offers wonderful scenery and an amazing abundance of wildlife.
Every year it hosts what is now recognised as the greatest show on earth, 'the migration' which takes place between July and October. Over a million wildebeest and two hundred thousand zebra pass
through on their endless journey, following the rains and in search of grass. Here you are able to witness the spectacular river crossings and the frenzy of predator activity.
The Masai Mara is also home to one of the great fighting tribes of Africa, the Masai whose culture is both fascinating and truly unique.
