Ol Pejeta Bush Camp
Ol Pejeta Bush Camp is a very comfortable yet traditional bush camp on the banks of the
Ewaso Nyiro river. Owner-managed by Alex and Diana Hunter of Insiders Africa, the camp is set in nearly100,000 acres in the Laikipia region of central Kenya, right on the Equator.
This tented bush camp on the Ol Pejeta Conservancy will offer guests the opportunity for a unique kind of safari experience in Kenya. Our four-night Interactive Conservation Safari gives a new
insight into modern wildlife conservation. During your days with us, you will encounter behind-the-scenes of daily life on this working wildlife conservancy and cattle ranch. Guests are welcome
to spend just one or two nights looking at some of these elements – or as long as they want – being as active, interactive, or as relaxed as they like when staying in camp.
Accommodation
Ol Pejeta Bush Camp has 6 tents with twin beds, all overlooking
the river, and accommodating a total of 12 guests sharing. The camp can be booked exclusively for a family or group of 4 or more for a small supplement per night. Further temporary tents can be
added for larger groups if you have a special request.
The style is of a traditional, simple, comfortable safari; the camp is built on an entirely eco-friendly design, there are no permanent structures and we make the camp’s
environmental impact as low as possible. Tents are furnished with single/double/twin beds (duvets and blankets), re-chargeable solar lights, ensuite loos, washstands on the tent veranda, and
safari bucket showers (brought on request, of any preferred temperature by guests at any time of day!).
Activities
This is for those interested in opportunities to observe and participate in the fascinating and complex variety of work on Ol
Pejeta Conservancy. Combining the integration of wildlife conservation with livestock production, and work within the local communities, we can propose a program whereby each day, at least one
conservation activity is combined with a morning or afternoon walk.
- Activities include the following:
- Guided wildlife walks on the open plains and along the river
- Day and night game drives (with spotlights and night-vision monoculars)
- Individual rhino assessments with researcher identification material
- Meet the Researchers and learn about wildlife data and monitoring compiled for the Ol Pejeta database
- Guided visits to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where orphan and rescued chimps are rehabilitated into family groups
- Learn how to use radio-tracking equipment to find, for example, the resident cheetah Toki (featured in the BBC documentary ‘Toki’s Tale’)
- Radio-collared lion tracking with the Ol Pejeta lion researcher
- Elephant and general wildlife monitoring with resident rangers and researchers
- Visit Baraka, a blind black rhino and observe him at close range at the rhino/wildlife treatment centre
- Learn about Boran and Ankole cattle pastoral care and integration techniques with wildlife
- Training walks with the Ol Pejeta tracker bloodhounds
- Spend a morning or afternoon alone in a hide overlooking a waterhole/salt lick area
- Visit a local primary school or dispensary in the area, supported by Ol Pejeta Conservancy
- Rhino tracking with the Ol Pejeta rangers (by special request only, maximum 2 guests per patrol)
