Saadani Safari Lodge
Neatly described by one guest in the visitor’s book as a “symbiosis of luxury with nature” Saadani Safari Lodge has recently been taken over, rebuilt and fully refurbished.
The enthusiasm for nature is infectious and the lodge provides everything you need as a haven from which to explore – comfort, ward and generous spirited service, a true love of the natural world and the prettiest surroundings.
What makes the lodge unique is the absence of coconut trees. Whilst this distracts from the typical image of tropical beaches, it means the true indigenous plants of the Savanna are conserved in one of the last coastal nature reserves in Africa.
Accommodation
Saadani Safari Lodge is small and intimate, with just nine individual tented cottages set along the beach, cooled by the soft ocean breezes and shaded by casherina trees. Cottages are twin or double with swathes of sail cloth adorning the ceilings, large romantic Zanzibar style nets and locally carved furniture. Each is is fully ensuite (hot and cold running water) and has an unrestricted view onto the ocean with a full-length veranda.
Double rooms all have our “Special Saadani Al Fresco” beds positioned on the outside veranda. Sleep out under the stars with the gentle lap of the wawes and cooling breeze from the Indian Ocean to lull you to sleep. A plethora of birds calls will signify the beginning of a new day and hearty breakfast.
All rooms are ensuite with bathroom creatively decorated with sand floors and shell mosaics. Hot water is solar powered and plentiful. Room lights operate 24 hours but as the lodge runs off solar generated power there are no electricity plugs available in the rooms. Charging of various electrical goods is however possible during the day.
Twin rooms are set with two single beds and an en-suite bathroom. Our bathrooms are closed in mosquito netting but designed to reflect the outdoors.
Activities
The heady mix of different ecosystems sets Saadani apart from all the national parks in Tanzania. The Blue haze of the Indian Ocean sashes over Lowland coastal forest, acacia woodlands, open grassland and mangroves. Saadani Safari Lodge set in the heart of the park offers an idyllic retreat to explore this most unique and distinguished destination.
The beauty of Saadani is that it allows for a full scope of activity from passive to energetic. Choose from relaxing on the beach with a good book to exploring the park by foot.
The sheer variety of game and scenery is a highlight in itself. The Wami is home to large pods of hippo, countless crocodile, and flamingos and pelicans; dolphins frequent the seas around the sand island; in the scrub bush and savannah, herds of buffalo and giraffe are commonplace and there are also lion, leopard and elephant. The Park is also a birders paradise with a huge variety of migratory and indigenous species present throughout the year.
