The Wildebeest Migration
Migration - Sayari Camp - Tanzania
The Eastern Africa Wildebeest Migration, also known as the Great Migration takes place between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. It is definitively one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on heart. Millions of wildebeest and thousands of zebra’s migrate between the 2 countries and parks, driven by their search for fresh grass. Predators (crocodile, lion, cheetah and hyena) are closely following these herds of wildebeests and zebras and will take every opportunity to catch their next meal.
It is not possible to precisely predict the timing of the annual wildebeest migration as it depends on the rains in the Serengenti between January and March. The wildebeest starts to move forward the Western Serengenti around May and June.
The best time to see the migration is around mid August and mid November in the Masai Mara when more than 2 millions of wildebeests and thousands of zebras are concentrated in a very small area and have to cross several rivers.
